SCR-based wind turbine control for a DC distributed wind farm

This paper details the study of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) for wind turbines and its control for maximum power point tracking, while connected to a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) bus using a 12 pulse thyristor network. The connection to the HVDC bus is done without the use of a back-to-back converter for the PMSG, reducing the complexity and cost of the PMSG power converter. The use of SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) vs IGBT at higher power levels also offer lower cost. HVDC power distribution allows ease of integrating DC storage for power conditioning and support the stability of the utility grid. Proposed new Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) is described in details and is verified by using MATLAB software and hardware setup.
