Optimum solution methods in range profile classification and finding the distribution of range cell fluctuations

This article describes the methodology behind previous attempts to build range profile classifiers and suggests that a different approach should be investigated. This approach is then implemented to find which distribution best describes the fluctuations that occur within range cells, and reveals an interesting result. The maximum likelihood criterion was used to devise a new method for determining which is the best fitting distribution to a set of data. The maximum likelihood method was found to agree with both the results that were previously found and the results that were found by the author using the standard technique of plotting the normalised moments.
