Intelligent control design for a class of automotive systems: case study

Diesel engines are highly versatile systems and have been heavily used in various industrial applications. But despite several of their attractive features, they suffer from highly nonlinear and time varying dynamics making them hard to control. The current study provides means for comparing four types of controllers, some of which are adaptive-based and others are knowledge-based. The main goal is to compare the controllers' performances in terms of speed regulation and robustness to load disturbances. This would be helpful in gaining insights for designing a hierarchical based controller making the system switch from one controller to another according to the operating conditions of the system.
