Securing the banking ecosystem: A quantum leap? Italian open panel

Ernesto Damiani (Professor of Service Security at the Dept. of Information Technology, University of Milan) and Claudio Santacesaria (Rototype) have promoted a non-profit initiative to deal with technical aspects of the banking ecosystem security. The kick off takes place at Campione d’Italia in the location of 2012 IEEE DEST-CEE Conference on the afternoon of June 18th with an open panel. Exceptional speakers of the Italian banking sector (including Marco Tempra of the Banca Popolare di Sondrio, Mario Monitillo of Carta Si, Stefano Saibene of Deutsche Bank) and some of the best Italian experts on security and cybercrime (for instance, Raoul Chiesa, founder of @Mediaservice.net; and Giorgio Fedon for OWASP, a world organization developing open source software for security and cofounder of Minded Security) will also attend the panel. Audience will include security operators of the banking ecosystem, and everyone who wants to contribute to the non-profit initiative or to follow its results. Everyone who wants to understand what is happening in the cybercrime world and why the current security measures must be changed is also welcome. The initiative is based on the assumption that joining forces the bank, industrial and university worlds can create new countermeasures in the struggle against a more and more organized cybercrime. Without huge investments, it is possible to spread new knowledge for preventing threats which now are only stemmed. Credit cards, ATM, PoS, internet banking and other new technologies based on NFC and cell phones define a very extensive and ever-changing area. International rules have been defined to manage properly credit cards (PCI-DSS) and several observers monitor new threats and share information about security incidents. Today cyber criminals often get to make the first move and only when a new threat has appeared countermeasures are sought. The panel will propose a new vision of studying pre-emptively new technologies and estimating risks by methodologies that can second-guess organized crime. Hopefully, the panel will foster the birth of a new organization, independent of market ties and composed of skilled professionals who can provide pre-emptive response to threats.
