The power grid of today is both aging and congested, and utilities face new challenges that put at risk the grid's ability to provide reliable power to industries that are becoming increasingly dependent on electric power. As more fossil fuels are used and higher levels of carbon dioxide are emitted into the atmosphere, the effects of global warming are impossible to ignore: melting icecaps and increased precipitation, which inevitably lead to meteorological disasters. In order to resolve these issues, smart grids which expand the use of renewable energy sources and make the power system more intelligent are required. With the verification of smart grid technologies in the Jeju demonstration project, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has introduced 8 new smart grid technologies: intelligent transmission and distribution (T&D) system, distributed generation system, intelligent demand management system, T&D information and communication technology (ICT) system, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) for loss reduction, smart grid (SG) integration platform, broadband communication and a light emitting diode (LED) control system with power line communication (PLC).
