Impact of Distributed Generation on Protection Coordination in a Radial Distribution Feeder

Integration of distributed generation (DG) in radial distribution network disturbs the coordination of the existing over-current protective devices in the network. Since coordination of protective devices is vital to a safe and secure operation of the network, the impacts of DG penetration protection coordination must be investigated in the planning and development stage. In this paper, the authors study the effects of DG penetration on protection coordination in a 66kV radial network with DG units with respect to degree of penetration and grid strength. The test network and over-current relays are simulated in Mat lab Simulink.
