Compact CPW-fed antenna loaded with dumbbell slot defected ground structure

At millimetre wave and microwave regimes, the interest in single metallic layer coplanar-waveguide (CPW) transmission line has increased significantly in recent years because no metallic ground plane is required and its little dependence on the substrate thickness. CPW-fed slot antennas are attractive due to the simplicity of fabrication and ease of integration with passive and active devices. In this paper the design of compact single metallic layer CPW fed antenna loaded with dumbbell slots symmetrically etched on both sides (etched in the grounds of the CPW) with open ended and short ended CPW microstrip signal line are presented and discussed. The proposed antenna has the advantage of suppression of higher harmonics. The suppression of higher harmonics is obtained by carefully etching defected ground structure (DGS) slots of dumbbell shape in the ground plane of an open (and short) ended CPW fed transmission line. It's found that, by incorporating this pattern (dumbbell-DGS), the proposed CPW antenna with a dumbbell-shaped slot exhibits the characteristics of a centre fed slot antenna together moderate gain. All the results were obtained with finite integration method (FIM) using CST Microwave studio.
