Summary form only given. The history of automation in the electric distribution grid is one of slow, conservative change. Even very recently, SCADA was considered automation, and there was almost a complete absence of any true, communication-based automation. It really wasn't until the 90s, that relatively primitive automation began appearing. Community Energy Storage represents not only a quantum leap in terms of changing technology, but also represents a sudden leap in numbers of distribution devices that are actively involved in control outside of the distribution substation. Such large systems create major opportunities and major challenges to adoption, particularly in the slow moving world of electric power distribution.
