Throughput and video performance of emerging LAN technologies: switched Ethernet and LAN emulation over ATM

In this paper, we empirically evaluate the performance of emerging LAN technologies, including 10 and 100 Mbps Ethernet, switched or unswitched, and Token Ring/Ethernet LAN Emulation over ATM. Throughput data will be presented for a large number of currently used operating systems, protocols, etc., with a discussion of the impact of each on performance. Also presented is a comparison of the technologies based on their ability to support multiple video sessions in the presence of file transfer activity.
