Archaeological models: pretty pictures or research tools?

Are architectural reconstructions in computer graphics a helpful research tool, or just pretty pictures to allow undergraduates a chance to get the look and feel of a forgotten place? The paper discusses the application of CAD tools, virtual reality and the Internet to architectural reconstructions such as the Athenian Acropolis and Stonehenge.
