Cell-by-Cell Dynamic Spectrum Allocation in Multi-Radio Environments

The spectral efficiency gain achieved through a cell-by-cell dynamic spectrum allocation scheme is investigated in this work. A WCDMA hierarchical cell structure comprising (micro) UMTS and (macro) DVB-T cells is considered in the study and a simulator has been developed and implemented in C++. Both, temporal and spatial traffic load distributions are considered simultaneously in the cell-by-cell dynamic spectrum allocation scheme. The temporal traffic load distribution is predicted based on the real life spectrum occupancy measurements, taken in New York City in 2004. Simulation results show, under the defined scenarios, an increase of 39% in spectrum efficiency over the conventional fixed allocation scheme and a 9% increase over the previously studied contiguous dynamic spectrum allocation scheme.
