Multi-machine power system stabilization with FACTS equipment applying fuzzy control

This paper presents a systematic approach to enhance power system stability using a fuzzy controller. The fuzzy controller comes into play, its role being to provide the stabilizing control signal for VSrC (variable series capacitor) which is one of the FACTS (flexible AC transmission system) equipment. The design of the fuzzy controller is based on the general ideas of sliding mode control, that has robustness against parametric uncertainties and unmodeled dynamics. Lyapunov stability criteria are used to secure the stability of the system. This technique with a qualitative experiential model, enables the fuzzy controller to be profitable for consistent performance in the face of changing operating conditions. To prove the validity of the proposed control, simulations were carried out on a multi-machine power system model under a three line to ground fault. Results from simulations studies show the successful improvement in the system damping performance.
