Design, modeling, simulation and performance of a MOSMPS fed from a universal standard Single-phase outlet

Many of the multiple output Switched Mode Power Supplies (MOSMPS) that are widely used in low power applications such as personal computers (PC) and medical electronic systems with stringent voltage regulation requirements, are often plugged into a standard utility power outlet (Single-phase ac 110–270 V, 50/60 Hz). It is not easy to regulate the output voltages using a single DC-DC converter especially when the input voltage is varying over a wide range. The problem is accentuated further by the pollution they cause at the utility interface due to the non-linear currents they draw from the ac mains, when they are used in large numbers. This paper is an attempt to implement such a MOSMPS supplied by a standard single-phase utility outlet which rms voltage can vary from 110–270V. The complete circuit uses only one single DC-DC converter which duty ratio is varied in accordance with the input supply voltage variations as well as load variations. The duty ratio is adjusted based on weighted error approach. The design of such an SMPS, its modeling, simulation and performance in terms of voltage regulation and input power quality are presented in this paper.
