As I have spent most of my professional life in a mixture of telecoms and semiconductors, talking about the relevance of analog technology to these domains is a fairly obvious choice. And in doing my homework, I came to the conclusion that what happened in this area of industry was not at all easy to foresee. I think it will be valuable to make this history the theme of this article, since the insights gleaned may well be applicable to other industrial fields. Indeed, I contributed to many expensive projects that worked perfectly but were never sold, and I also saw competitors doing complicated and often stupid things that nevertheless gained market traction.
