High resolution target height estimation; analysis of the ARTIST trials

The process of determining the target elevation in a maritime environment with a phased array radar that is equipped with multiple receiver channels is considered. Based on measured data, a comparison between a traditional technique representing monopulse and a so-called high resolution (HR) technique is presented. The HR technique fits data predicted by a bi-path model to received data. An impression is given of the performance improvement that is achieved, It is shown that significant improvements are feasible provided that certain criteria concerning array size and radar-target geometry are met.
