Establishing basic computing skills amongst first-year engineering students from diverse educational backgrounds

One of the problems arising from the changing composition of the student body at historically white universities in South Africa is the significant differences in computing experience of first-time-entering engineering students. This paper describes two courses which have been introduced at the University of Cape Town to address this problem.
