An optimal location area decision method considering mobile power status

Registration is a process by which a base station gets the information about mobile stations. Registration will become an increasingly important issue in mobile phone communications, especially in microcellular systems with the increase of location updating signaling traffic. Nine different types of registration schemes may be implemented in CDMA mobile systems (CMS). Four types of registration schemes that will be widely used in the future, consisting of the power up registration scheme (PURS), power down registration scheme (PDRS), distance based registration scheme (DBRS) and zone based registration scheme (ZBRS) are analyzed, and the size of the location area is provided for optimal operation. Both registration and paging should be considered in designing the system. By obtaining the combined signaling traffic of paging and registration, we analyzed four registration schemes for various parameters of mobile stations behavior (unencumbered call duration, mobile power up and down rate, velocity, etc.). We also provide numerical results for performance and optimal location area.
