A 43.5mW 77GHz receiver front-end in 65nm CMOS suitable for FM-CW Automotive Radar

A low power mmW receiver front-end, suitable for a FM-CW Automotive Radar has been implemented using a 1P6M 65nm RFCMOS process. It has been designed using a direct conversion architecture. The input and interstage impedance matching networks have been implemented using Multi-layer Coplanar Wave guide (MCPW) based inductors. MCPW lines can realize small inductance values with high quality factor at mmW frequencies, improving gain, noise figure and power consumption performance of the receiver. It is shown that by adjusting the ground spacing and conductor width of the MCPW, an optimized 52pH inductor can achieve a quality factor of 37 at 77GHz. The fabricated front-end exhibits a maximum voltage gain of 15dB over the baseband and presents a LNA noise figure of 7dB which makes it suitable for next generation of collision avoidance systems. The achieved power consumption of the receiver front-end is only 43.5mW from a 1.5V voltage supply.
