Conservation of momentum and recoil in the railgun

Some controversial issues and some uncertainties have been raised concerning conservation of momentum and recoil in the railgun. These are due to the apparent failure of the Biot-Savart-Lorentz force expression to conserve momentum. A gas analogy for the electromagnetic field is suggested as a physical interpretation which resolves the problems.
