The theoretical analysis of a magnetic flux generator

This paper deals with the air-core rotary magnetic flux generator (MFG) which is intended for storage of magnetic energy and for discharge of powerful pulse current. The principle of MFG operation is based on amplification of magnetic energy by means of cyclic magnetic flux compression under self-excitation condition. The mathematical model describes the dynamic and energy characteristics in the cyclic process of magnetic energy storage. In the model, winding heating and commutation processes are taken into account. Computation results and results of optimization of generator parameters are given. The computation results show the coefficient of magnetic energy amplification can be more than 1000 at a storage time of 10-50 ms depending on winding parameters and an initial rotor tip speed of about 300-400 m/s. The magnetic energy density of a MFG with uncooled windings can be more than 1 J/g.
