Voice traffic in timed token protocol local area networks

This paper presents two bandwidth allocation schemes for synchronous voice traffic in timed token protocol ring systems such as FDDI, as well as procedures to realise these schemes in a practical system. They are aimed at satisfying the timing requirements inherent in the timed token medium access control (MAC) protocol, optimising the channel utilisation and providing fair service to all users. These aims are accomplished by dynamically allocating the time slot to transmit voice packets at each voice source on a per token rotation basis. The performance of an example system is studied by simulation.
