Preparation and Properties of (SN)x

The chain compound (SN)
x
is the first example of a superconducting polymer. In this paper we review the chemistry, structure, and physical properties of (SN)
x
and describe how the electrical properties of this novel material depend upon the crystal growth technique. The thermal properties of S
2
N
2
and (SN)
x
are discussed with particular reference to the crystal growth process. The fibrous nature of the polymer is described and evidence is presented showing that interchain coupling plays a significant role in determining the physical properties of this material. Finally we summarize our attempts to prepare analogous polymeric metals.
