Overview of exploratory research in soft computing applications to power systems at the Electric Power Research Institute

Soft computing might be characterized as automated intelligent estimation. It is intended to provide an alternative to more conventional "hard" computing that allows for the formal and systematic treatment of problems which, due to their size, complexity or uncertainties, are otherwise not practical to process and solve. Ensuring the secure and efficient operation of electric power systems in an increasingly complex and uncertain future environment appears to be one such problem. Deregulation, competition, implementation of FACTS devices, and tightening environmental/land-use restrictions are expected to increase significantly the complexity of electric power system contingency planning and operations. Automated management of future power networks may be necessary for utilities to achieve-in real time-the most satisfactory compromise between adequate security and economically optimum operation. The Strategic Research and Development Activity within EPRI is exploring a number of soft computing approaches to enhance the coordination of system components so as to reduce outages, boost efficiency, enhance power quality, and gain maximum benefit from existing assets. These projects are being undertaken on behalf of the Institute's member utilities and in support of EPRI's internal business units who are charged with the ultimate development of useful products for those members.
