The use of iron oxide as an oxygen carrier in chemical looping combustion taking CO and biomass gas as fuels

Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) has been suggested as an energy efficient method for CO
₂
capture without extra energy cost for the separation of CO
₂
. In CLC oxygen is transferred from the combustion air to fuel by means of an oxygen carrier. The fuel and the combustion air are never mixed, and the combustion products (CO
₂
and steam) are kept separate from the flue gas. After condensation of the water almost pure CO
₂
is obtained. In this paper, the feasibility of using iron oxide as an oxygen carrier has been investigated in a fluidized-bed. CO and biomass gas were taken as fuels, and the tests were performed at different temperatures and cycle number. The influence on CLC process of reaction conditions was investigated.
