Mobility calculus in cellular wireless networks

Future personal communication networks (PCN) supporting multimedia traffic will have small cell size (picocellular) resulting in a much higher cell crossing rates due to handoff as compared with the traditional cellular wireless networks. A generic probabilistic model is presented for cellular wireless networks. The model considers any number of cells and an arbitrary mobility pattern. The absence of a product form solution and the large dimensionality of the problem in any practical situation make an "exact" solution impossible. We concentrate on two limiting behavior of slow and high mobility rate. Using the system behavior in these limiting cases, a simple methodology for approximating the performance measure of the system is provided.
