A pico-cellular concept for a wireless hybrid LAN using infrared modulation

This paper presents a model for overlapping coverage areas in an infrared pico-cellular system. Two dimensional regular tessellation and channel allocation for radio cellular communications have often been described. Radio frequency reuse is a well-tried solution to cover areas which are sufficiently far away to use the same channel without perturbing each other. The infrared frequency spectrum is large but sets of devices for FDMA are not yet available. This model has been designed for an industrial LAN including the use of fixed infrared transceivers, linked to a wired backbone, that serve as gateways for communications with Moving Stations. It takes down-links and up-links into account to define pico-cell classes; the pico-cells of the same class can simultaneously have access to the infrared medium during the same time slot. It is useful to have a projection of the fixed transceiver localization and the number of classes.
