Design and implementation of a high performance tracking control for brushless DC motor

In this paper, a high performance tracking control driver for brushless DC motor is introduced. Novel design concepts of a two-layer self-tuning controller are presented. The proposed control structure consists of two control layers: tracking control and supervisory control. To ensure robustness of the synthesis system during severe disturbances, the tracking controller uses an imposed time delay to qualify the estimated parameters. The shifting control algorithm is used to work on the on-line tuning to maintain the signal within the limits. The supervisory controller continuously monitors the synthesis status of the estimated parameters, the structure of the controller and the response of the motor and performs a novel robust synthesis of the parameter estimation to ensure the stability in the scheme. The proposed design scheme is realized using a digital motion controller HCTL1100 from Hewlett-Packard with PC based computer. The setup of a brushless DC motor, a DC-to-AC inverter, and a designed controller has been constructed to verify the control scheme. Simulation and experimental results show that the brushless DC motor driver and controller achieve tracking effectiveness and robust system stability.
