Luminescent properties of a novel nanocrystalline Lu3Ga5O12:Tb3+ phosphor for FED application

Recently, field emission displays (FEDs) have attracted much attention due to its advantages, such as high luminance, wide viewing angle, low power consumption and so on

. High efficient low-voltage phosphor is vital for the success of field emission display (FED). Although many novel phosphors have been studied recently, further improvement is needed to make these phosphors to meet the requirement of FED. Phosphors applied in FED require high CL luminance, high saturation current and high stability when operating under low voltage (≤7kV) and high current density (≥100μA/cm
²
)
^[3]
. Nowadays, sulfide-based phosphors are widely used in the FED anode screen due to their high brightness. However, sulfide could decompose under high current density and contaminate the emitters
^[3]
. Oxide-based phosphors are more stable under electron bombardment and have been intensively studied recently
^[4,5]
Furthermore, nanocrystalline phosphors are considered to possess high CL intensity under low voltage due to the quantum size effect and quantum confinement effect
^[6]
. Some researchers have reported nanocrystalline phosphors which possess good CL properties
^[6]
. In this work, a novel nanocrystalline Lu
3
Ga
5
O
12
:Tb
³⁺
phosphor is studied.
