Simulation of a Manhattan street network for high-speed ATM applications

The paper presents performance evaluation of a Manhattan-street network (MSN) with a new node structure for high-speed ATM applications. The MSN has a torus structure and belongs to the class of deflection-routing networks. The authors use shared buffering between inputs and outputs of each node. With shared buffers the deflection of a cell occurs when all buffer slots are full. This method potentially increases the system throughput and reduces the number of deflections and thus reduces the average delay. The authors evaluate effects of high offered traffic loads and large shared queues through extensive simulation experiments. They also assess the effectiveness of the speed advantage required to accommodate arbitrary traffic on the external links.
