Random access with controlled time of arrival for distributed spread-spectrum packet radio networks

A random-access scheme controlling the time of arrival is proposed for distributed spread-spectrum packet radio networks with small radius. Each terminal can send its packet randomly at anyone of possible N/sub w/ time instants, equally spaced over one period of spread-spectrum signals. Such transmissions initiated at different time instants can be resolved because of high time resolution of wideband signals. Theoretical evaluations of throughput demonstrate that the combination of the random-access scheme with common-transmitter (C-T) protocol results in more significant improvement than the case of receiver-transmitter (R-T) protocol, and so the advantages of broadcasting and carrier sense can be utilized with acceptable performance.
