Surveillance performance

The concept of surveillance performance, introduced by Kronhamn (see IEEE 1993 National Radar Conference, Boston, USA, 1993) is generalized. Surveillance performance is a joint search and track performance measure for surveillance sensors. The measure includes object acquisition and track probability, track continuity, track accuracy and false track generation. The performance can be calculated analytically and is a means, at an early stage, to assess the system performance potential and to properly choose basic system parameters. It is shown how sensor characteristics such as scan time and sensitivity (false alarm rate) should be chosen and how object numbers and maneuverability affects the performance. The surveillance performance measure can be used both to dimension a sensor from a tactical point of view and to compare different types of sensors, such as TWS radars and adaptive phased array radars.
