Motion modelling of video sequences: applications to compression

Video compression standards are all based on a hybrid coding approach, where the video frames are represented partially as motion information and partially as (residual) intensity information. In this paper we examine the advantages and disadvantages of motion and intensity information as efficient representations of video sequences. We present a simple framework for constructing a full resolution motion field, and an efficient way to code the motion field. We describe a new video coding algorithm, that builds upon the traditional block-based motion compensation scheme, and codes the residual information as motion rather than intensity. Simulation results from the new algorithm show that it compares quite favorably with the traditional approach of coding the intensity residual after block motion compensation.
