A low-power baseband receiver IC for frequency-hopped spread spectrum applications

A baseband receiver IC which will be incorporated into a monolithic CMOS 900 MHz frequency-hopped spread spectrum (FH/SS) transceiver is described. The chip performs noncoherent binary/quaternary frequency shift keying (FSK) demodulation, equal-gain diversity combining of dual antenna branches, and symbol and frequency synchronization. The chip also accommodates variable data rates from 2-160 kbps, programmable hop rates, and tunable bandwidth of loop filters. The die area of this 1-/spl mu/m CMOS chip is 5.4 mm /spl times/5.4 mm with a power consumption of less than 6 mW from a 3-V supply.
