Staged Fault Tests of Relaying and Stability on Kansas-Nebraska 270-Mile 154-Kv Interconnection

Results and conclusions are presented from 22 staged fault tests made on a 154-kv transmission line and terminal systems to check the characteristics of new long-line relays, discussed in companion papers,

which were designed to differentiate between faults and high power swings. Observed power swings and relay performance are compared with theoretical aspects and predictions. Data on the transientstability limit of the interconnection, together with observations made during the tests, are also presented. Measured values of line constants and short-and open-circuit impedances are given, together with results of attenuation tests at carrier frequencies. Manner of initiating the faults, scheduling of power flows, and organizing personnel are briefly discussed.
