Modelling of stimulated Brillouin scattering effects on optical fibre supported millimeter-wave systems

Stimulated Brillouin scattering may have serious effects on optical fibre supported millimeter-wave systems. The interactions of SBS with source laser phase noise, fibre dispersion, differential delay between the two carriers and the modulation of the optical carrier are investigated using a modelling and simulation platform developed for this purpose. Illustrative results are presented and effects of frequency dependent attenuation caused by stimulated Brillouin scattering are highlighted. We find that an optimal laser linewidth exists for maximum received signal eye opening.
