Mind models applied to the user interface for modern instrumentation

One of the features of the mind model of the instrument is that the user has in their mind an idea of how the instrument works. This is very important because as the instrument is being used, the user predicts the effects of adjusting the controls before adjusting them. If the effects of the prediction and the actual effects on the instrument match up, then the user clearly has modelled the instrument in their mind. As an illustration of how a different user model can be presented than the actual function of the instrument, an example is taken of an intelligent instrument designed at Brunel University.
