The Los Angeles Smart Corridor Project

The primary goal of the Smart Corridor Demonstration Project is to test technologically advanced methods of improving regional mobility on freeways and parallel major streets. This is to be accomplished without incurring the dramatic environmental and economic costs associated with the building of new freeways and streets. Three major objectives in fulfilling this goal are: (1) operating the individual facilities within the corridor at maximum efficiency; (2) balancing traffic flow between the freeway and parallel surface streets in order to optimize the use of existing capacity and minimize delay and congestion; and (3) management dissemination of motorist information. The first phase (conceptual design) analyzed how the coordinated application of traffic control methods and motorist information systems could be used by the operating agencies in meeting these objectives. A Smart Corridor Central System was identified as being a key element in corridor management through interagency coordination. This paper presents a description of the Smart Corridor Central System, its functionality and its interfaces with the various agencies.
