Results on the optimal (free-order) H/sub 2//l/sub 1/ solution

This paper summarizes an analytical approach to the solution of the H/sub 2//l/sub 1/ optimization problem. It is shown that the case where T/sub zw//spl ne/T/sub mr/ does not necessarily result in finite impulse response (FIR) solutions for both T/sub zw/ and T/sub mr/. It is conjectured that the solution to the general SISO (or MIMO one block) H/sub 2//l/sub 1/ problem will result in an FIR sequence for T/sub mr/, but not necessarily for T/sub zw/. Based on this conjecture, a numerical approach to the solution is developed which is capable of solving (exactly) for the optimal H/sub 2//l/sub 1/ compensator using a finite truncation level. The numerical method is demonstrated with a SISO F-16 aircraft example.
