Lack of Mathematical Knowledge and Skills of Students as a Problem for the Further Development of Modern Quantitative Geography

The students could solve only simple problems passably. The higher the class in which Mathematical knowledge and skills were taught at grammar school the worse the students' mastering of Mathematical concepts and skills. One important reason might be that mathematical knowledge and skills are not examined sufficiently. Final secondary-school examinations in Mathematics are not obligatory until now. Therefore Geography has problems to finda sufficient number of German students which are able to perform research in quantitative modelling of phenomena and processes which are moulding the earth's surface. Lecturers of other subjects at the university, even lecturers of technical sciences, make similar observations. Therefore a training of mathematical concepts and skills at the beginning of the studies of the university is necessary.
