An application of DSP to automatic PMD compensation in optical fiber communication systems

This paper describes implementation of a universal digital signal processing (DSP) for adaptive polarization mode compensation (PMD) compensation in optical fiber communication systems. PMD is one of the most difficult issues in implementing high-speed optical communication systems with bit rates of 10 Gb/s or higher. Because PMD possesses the time-varying and statistical properties, to establish an effective and fast logic control compensator is an important and challenging task. We designed a DSP-based integrated control system to complete first-order PMD and second-order PMD compensation. The experiment results showed that this system uses much less time on the compensation process. This DSP-based logic control unit is highly integrated and low consumed power.
