Impact of delay on the voice transmission performance of mobile-satellite systems

This paper presents the design and analysis of an experiment, which was conducted in order to assess subjectively the impact of transmission delay on mobile voice communications. This study was undertaken using simulated end-to-end propagation delays representative of low Earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) systems. From this it was concluded that "wireline-quality" and "communications-quality" circuits differ as regards the perception of voice transmission performance as a function of delay.<
