DSP based implementation of Sliding Mode Speed Controller for Vector Controlled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor drive

The paper deals with the performance analysis and hardware implementation of a Sliding Mode (SM) Speed Controller for Vector Controlled (VC) Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drive using a digital signal processor (DSP). The power circuit of the PMSM drive system consists of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) based voltage source inverter (VSI) and the gate driver circuit. The hardware of control circuit consists of current sensors and interfacing circuits. The reference speed, rotor speed estimation using sensed position signals, SM speed controller, reference frame transformation, vector controller and PWM current controller for the control of VSI feeding PMSM are implemented in assembly language of DSP-ADMC401. The simulation model of the PMSM drive system is developed in MATLAB environment with simulink and PSB toolboxes to simulate the performance of the PMSM drive system. The simulated performance of the Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) for speed control of PMSM drive is validated with test results for starting, speed reversal, load perturbation and steady-state running conditions.
