Kerr nonlinearity in small core optical fibres and nanowires: A generalised model, and application to microstructured fibres

We develop a generalized relation for effective nonlinear coefficients of waveguides with arbitrary refractive index profiles. Significant differences between the new definition and usual one are demonstrated in the regime of strong guidance or waveguides with sub-wavelength inclusions.
