Damping sub-synchronous oscillations of power system using ANN-based controlled SVC

Power system oscillation damping, have always been an undeniable problem for engineers. In this paper we try to show that a supplementary lead-lag controller using wide area signals can greatly decrease the oscillations, because the global signals involve more wide-area oscillation modes. Parameters of this damping lead-lag controller are obtained by phase compensation method. Then an artificial neural network (ANN) is implemented to calculate the damping controller's gain. To validate the proposed controller, computer simulation using MATLAB/ SIMULINK is performed on a 2-area, 4- machine test system. The results show that using a well-trained ANN in proposed method, can clearly improve the damping of sub-synchronous oscillations.
