Preparation and Magneto-Optical Properties of Metal Fine Particles Dispersed in Liquid

Fe, Ni, Cu and MnSb fine particles were prepared at various Ar pressures (10
^-4
to 5.0 Torr), and were dispersed in a liquid (arkylnaphthalene with 10 vol% surfactant). The mean diameter of Fe particles increased from 20Å to 180Å, and that of MnSb particles from 160Å to 280Å, as the Ar pressure under which particles were prepared was increased. Fe and Cu particles included oxides, and MnSb was decomposed to Mn and Sb when the pressure was low. The Faraday rotation θ
_F
of these liquids was measured for various particle concentrations. The θ
_F
decreased with decreasing particle concentration. These results are in good agreement with values calculated assuming that particles are dispersed homogeneously and do not interact with each other.
