Contributions to lightning research for transmission line compaction

Research on lightning performance of compact transmission lines is presented. Various parameters affecting the tripout rate are described, particularly when reduced dielectric clearances are considered. By means of a series of laboratory impulse tests on a geometric scale guyed type structure, the critical flashover voltage of a compact inverted delta configuration is obtained. This parameter is used as an input of a digital program which estimates the lightning tripout rate expected for this type of tower. The compact design of a 400 kV transmission line is proposed and the requirements for future research work are anticipated.<
