Robust decentralized control design for damping power system oscillations

This paper presents some preliminary results in the application of a robust control technique for the design of decentralized power system damping controllers. Two design approaches are performed: the first approach is a decoupled design; and the second approach is a sequential design. The procedures are used to tune an SVC and a thyristor-controlled series compensator to enhance the damping of two inter-area, modes in a 3-area, 6-machine power system. The design results are first obtained when the input signals for the damping controllers are derived from the machine speeds. In a second design, the input signals are synthesized from the local voltage and current measurements.<
