The role and use of power and energy dynamics in the analysis and design of control systems

This paper considers the state space concepts of power and energy dynamics of a linear system in the analysis and design of feedback controllers. It is argued that a design paradigm based on the MIMO power dynamics can satisfy stability, performance and robustness requirements. Power and energy dynamics of first and second order MIMO systems are discussed. Some new results on the 2nd order MIMO systems are presented. The design of optimal compensators using power and energy concepts is also investigated. For this purpose, both linear-quadratic (L/sub 2/ space) and linear-quartic (L/sub 4/ space) performance criteria are studied. The first and second order necessary conditions for an optimal solution are derived resulting in a CAD tool for control systems.<
