Operation and Control of the Mexican Interconnected System

A description of the evolution of the Mexican Interconnected System is presented, major characteristics and operating problems are summarized and the control hierarchy, implemented is described. The computerized real time control system scheduled to be operational in early 1984 is presented. Given the longitudinal structure of the power system and the vast geographical area covered, six Area Control Centers with 200 RTU's will be collecting data from the power system. The National Control Center (NCC) will be linked to the Area Control Centers (ACC's) via satellite conmnications, and will direct all the applications related to the secure and economical operation of the interconnected power system. Computer configurations and real time and application software are described, both for the ACC's and the NCC. A brief summary of the major: problems faced during the implementation of the control system, and in-house developments in software and hardware are also included.
