A Radiation Measuring System with Potential Automotive Under-Hood Application

An automotive under-hood radiation antenna system (AURAS) has been developed for measuring the electric and magnetic fields produced in the engine compartment of a vehicle by nanosecond impulse signals radiating from an automotive ignition system. The system consists of two sensors (one E-and one H-field) and a wideband amplifier which is capable of operation between 200 and 1000 MHz. Standard 50-Ω coaxial transmission lines are used to interface the sensors with laboratory instrumentation. The sensors are designed to measure surface field quantities and their voltage output is made proportional to the incident field by passively loading the sensors with appropriate elements.
